In the Old Testament this is the name of one of the twelve spies sent by Moses into Israel. TONKS; A "tonk" means "a fool or an idiot," "a powerful hit or stroke," and "to strike."

Ted grew up in a fairly urbanized area of Cambridge. When he wasn't in school, he spent most of his time playing in the park with the other children in the area or indoors, where his mother usually sat him down and had him read, mainly because she wanted to force her love of literature onto her sons. He had always found this boring and useless, but it was because of this that Ted had learned to read before he entered Infant School and had not a clear understanding of, but had dabbled in some classic literature by Junior School. As a matter of fact, it was one of the leading factors of his academic success. He did well on his Secondary School entrance exam, but that proved to be useless as he had decided to attend Hogwarts instead of muggle Secondary School.
Upon entering Hogwarts, the sorting hat seemed to know of his love for books and studies, though that had been more of a trait that had been forced upon him, he had grown to love it over the years, and placed him in Ravenclaw. Over the course of his first year, he had become enthralled by the world of magic and he discovered that he had quite a talent for Potions and Herbology, and with the right amount of work, he could manage decent grades in all of his classes.
After leaving Hogwarts, Ted went on to St. Mungo's to become a mediwizard. Ted had always wanted to be a doctor, but since he was a wizard, there was a whole new group of people that he could help in a whole new way. He breezed through training in his own way, which is reading, studying, and observing obsessively, and became a full-fledged mediwizard employed at St. Mungo's.
While working, he met a young witch by the name of Andromeda Black. He thought she was quite pretty and found everything she did enchanting. Mustering up all his courage, he asked her if she would like to get tea or do something else that would be appropriate for people who don't know each other very well and would like to get to know each other better to do after work. Much to his surprise, she agreed. Ted had heard of the Blacks, and mulled over what could have possessed her to agree to see him on a more-than-co-worker basis. Day after day went by, and Ted grew to notice something distinct about the way she spoke to him - she didn't know he was a muggleborn. He kept it to himself for a while, but deciding he was being quite selfish, finally admitted to her that he wasn't quite who she thought he was. Andromeda avoided him for the longest two weeks of his life, and Ted constantly wondered to himself if he had done the wrong thing. If he should have continued lying, if it meant it would have kept her in his life. He couldn't have been more relieved when she wanted to continue seeing each other. He took her to muggle places and taught her to do muggle things, but tried and failed and it was clearly obvious that she wasn't enjoying them. Still, she tried and he loved her for it. And therein was the problem. Theodore Tonks realized that he was in love with Andromeda Black - Andromeda Black who was bred from pureblood royalty and hated all things muggle. Who was supposed to hate all things muggle, but Ted couldn't help but think that maybe, just maybe, she felt the same way about him as he did about her. So, he asked her to marry him. And she did. Of course, only after having announce it to her family cause her have severed all ties with them and be disowned, which he can't resent them and hate himself for more. Ted knew what she had done for them, for him and he loved her more, if it were possible.
Nymhadora Tonks was born just a bit too soon after the wedding, and with her metamorphmagic, Ted's messiness, and Andromeda's princess moments, the Tonkses are a loving, happy family. They are not perfect, not in any way, but loving and happy is more than enough for Ted.

Ted is a warm, friendly and a very easily approachable fellow with a good sense of humor. He's very relaxed and easygoing, and never likes to take things too seriously, unless he absolutely has to. He avoids violence whenever possible, which is fairly easy since he's not overtly temper mental and has a reasonable head on his shoulders most of the time. When he is upset, he'll speak very slowly and deliberately and try to calm himself down by reading, but he's usually reading when he's not upset anyway. He doesn't care much for orderliness or organization, and tends to leave things strewn around and doesn't bother to clean up after his own messes.
Ted's response to most things is to get over the initial shock, then smile about it in a good-natured way. For instance, if someone were to come up to him and say "Ted, I just burned down your house," he would sigh and say "Well, what did you go and do that for?" then he would grin sheepishly and say "I suppose I'll have to find someplace to sleep for the time being." He lets things go, he forgives and forgets, but that isn't to say he won't fight back if push comes to shove.

Though he was awkward and gangly in his teenage years, Ted has grown into his tall form and is now much more comfortable in his skin. Despite his height, Ted rarely ever comes off as intimidating, it's rather difficult to imagine him meaning any harm when he always looks so easygoing and carefree.
